Five Tips for Saving Our Environment and Recycling Electronic Devices With ecoATM

I recently partnered with ecoATM to share important tips about saving our environment.  Today is Earth Day! To people who care about the environment, today marks the day to celebrate the earth and make a commitment to make lifetime changes to change our environmental impact.  Every year our family takes a look around our home and tries to find new ways to make the Earth a better place to live for our children.   On Earth Day I would also like to encourage you to take the initiative to  save our environment by recycling your unused electronics with ecoATM.

I recently checked out a local ecoATM and got instant cash for recycling my families unused electronics.   The kiosk was easy to use and provided many options for recycling phones, tables and mp3 players from various vendors.  It inspired me to take an inventory of all the electronics and accessories that are hidden in drawers and boxes around my home and recycle them.

Five Tips for Saving Our Environment and Recycling electronic devices with ecoATM:

1. Cash For Unused Devices:  Did you know that 57 percent of American device owners have idle cell phones in their homes, yet only 22 percent state they have previously recycled cell phones they no longer use.   ecoATM enables consumers to dispose of unused electronics responsibly by making recycling of old phones simple, fast & fun.  Simply places your device in the kiosk and obtain a quote for the best price for your device.  If you agree, ecoATM will dispense the cash immediately.

2. Location Location Location: There are about 900 kiosks located nationwide in local malls and surrounding areas. They are very easy to use and conveniently located.  Most transactions can be completed in 5-15 minutes.  You can find the nearest location online and get a preliminary quote.

3. Preparing Your Phone For Recycling:  Do you have an old iPod collecting dust around the home?  ecoATM also provides an option to recycle your unused mp3 and get cash to use towards a purchase of a new device.  Whether you are selling a phone, mp3 or tablet you should make sure to erase your personal data before visiting a local ecoATM.  If you are recycling an iPhone, make sure that you have deactivated iCloud and Find My iPhone on your device and  get instant cash payments as an incentive to recycle.

4: Trading in Devices that Don’t work:   Do you have a devices that doesn’t work?  No problem.  ecoATM is the world’s first automated eWaste recycling station, a friendly green machine looking to pay cash for the responsible recycling of your old cell phones, MP3 players and tablets.    It also has options to sell devices that are not working or dispose of unused electronics in a safe manner.

5. Recycling Unused Accessories:  ecoATM also has several options for disposing of unused accessories via the accessory bins on the side of the kiosk to keep them out of landfills or from languishing in desk drawers.  EcoATM can’t offer cash for these items, but offers a safe way to dispose of unused accessories.

With all your ecoATM transactions you also have the opportunity to donate towards a local nonprofit.  Have something different?  make sure to check out ecoATM for a complete list of over 4,000 devices.

Considering taking some time out of your day  on Earth Day to make a difference and recycle your old Tech Devices with ecoATM.

Celebrating 365 Days of California Strawberries

Did you know that nearly 90 percent of U.S.-grown fresh strawberries come from California, with more than 1.7 BILLION pounds being harvested annually – basically, if California were a country, it would be the world’s largest producer of strawberries!

I recently attended the 365 Days of California Strawberries Farm & Culinary Event and learned about the process of growing, cooking and celebrating life with strawberries. We enjoyed over 30 different appetizers and entrees made with fresh California Strawberries and toured a California Strawberries farm. All our strawberry inspired recipes can be easily made at home.

California Strawberries Beach Side

We started off the festivities with a beachside gathering with strawberry appetizers and main dishes. We had grilled salmon with fresh strawberry mango salsa , strawberry salad with berry dressing, chocolate dipped strawberries and strawberry shortcake. Two of my favorites dishes were the strawberry gazpacho and strawberry mango salsa. The gazpacho was light and delightfully sweet. I also couldn’t resist getting second and third servings of the Mango Salsa with tortilla chips.

California Strawberries Farm Tour

The following day we headed out to a California Strawberries Farm for a hands-on tour of a family owned and operated Strawberry Farm. We walked through the strawberry fields, learned how to properly pick strawberries, touched and smelled the soil with our bare hands and ate fresh strawberries. We also learned about the hard work, discipline and dedication involved in farming strawberries Looking at their dedicated and streamlined process, I wonder if they use any figured farm software to get their operations in order. It would be really interesting if they did!

Now, I think that after all this, we would also want to cultivate strawberries in our backyard. After all, it is not an overwhelming process. Needless to say, the majority of strawberry farming problems can be overcome if one has the space. Yes, one might also need to have the knowledge of the right farming tools, but that is not tough to be enlightened about. Nevertheless, protecting the fruit from animals and pets can be a bit tricky. For the former, installing fences (which, by the way, can be sourced from PVC Fence Suppliers on the Web) can prove to be useful; for the latter, using organic pesticides could do the work.

Anyway, coming back to the topic, there are more than 400 strawberry farmers in California, many from multi-generational farming families who grow both conventional and organic strawberries. California grows more organic strawberries than any other place in the world. This is quite an accomplishment because strawberries are not easy to grow, especially in a shifty environment like California’s. I’m quite sure the farmers must use sophisticated technology such as drone dusters and weather monitoring (learn more here) to ensure that the farms maintain a good yield all year. Needless to say, it’s nothing short of a miracle that we manage to get strawberries 365 days a year.

Terry & Will Terry (L-R) – Father & Son – Terry Berries Strawberry Farmers

Our favorite multi-generational strawberry farm is Terry Berries Farm, the farm we toured. Edgar Terry an Oxnard native and farmer was raised by a family that has farmed in Ventura, California since 1890. A fourth generation Californian, Edgar wanted to be a farmer since he was a child. Edgar runs his family owned business, Terry Farms, Inc., alongside his wife of 29 years, Martha, who handles HR for the company. His son, William, handles the day-to-day farming activities, while his daughter manages employee compliance, hiring and food safety. Edgar’s brother runs the machine shop. In addition to growing strawberries on 200 acres since 2002, Edgar grows a variety of crops, including celery, peppers, cilantro and spinach on about 2,000 acres of land.

California Strawberries Culinary Event

After our California Strawberries Farm tour we celebrated with more Strawberry inspired recipes. Our specially prepared menu highlights the nutritional benefits and creatively prepared recipe ideas for cooking with strawberries:

We enjoyed fresh herbs in farms cheese with stuffed strawberries rolled in pecan bacon. Yes! Bacon. These yummy appetizers were very savory. The lacinto kale salad with strawberries, red grapes, spicy candied pecan & blue cheese was my favorite entree.

After enjoying the mountain views for a couple minutes we enjoyed our next course, grilled chicken tacos with savory strawberry serrano, fire roasted corn, red onions, avocado salsa with ancho cheese. We also savored a peanut butter, strawberry jam and bacon Kobe slider with waffle fries and strawberry ketchup. The strawberry ketchup was delicious!

We ended our culinary experience with a strawberry shortcake popsicle and strawberries and ice cream. It was truly one of the most amazing culinary experiences I have ever attended. My palette is still dancing!

California Strawberries Nutritional FUN facts

  • Superfruit: 8 strawberries contain more vitamin C than an orange. Low in sugar, with only about 50 calories, strawberries are a great source of fiber, folate and potassium.
  • Stay smart with strawberries: According to a recent study, eating strawberries more than twice a week appears to delay cognitive aging by up to 2.5 years!
  • Good for your heart: Potassium found in strawberries can help control blood pressure and fight strokes. Plus, antioxidants, fiber and phytochemicals in strawberries have been shown to reduce total cholesterol levels.

The next time you buy and eat strawberries, I hope you remember my California Strawberries tour and consider creating nutritional strawberry inspired recipes to celebrate life. Make sure to visit California Strawberries for strawberry recipe ideas & additional tips.

I’m very thankful to California Strawberries for the opportunity to tour a California Strawberries farm and the Terry Family for sharing their love and passion for farming strawberries.

Lo Que La Vida Me Robo Character Introduction and Giveaway

Disclosure:  This post was created in partnership with the Stiletto Blogger Network and Univision. However, all opinions expressed herein are my own.

As I mentioned earlier this week, Univision recently announced their new telenovela,  ”Lo Que La Vida Me Robo”.  The Mexican telenovela will  capture your attention by telling the  story of  love, laughter, betrayal and wealth in the small town of aguazul.  The Mexican telenovela is also full of interesting characters that will keep you entertained.

I’m looking forward to the new novela and plan to use the Univision UVideos app to stay connected with the telenovela and host of characters.  Tune in to Lo Que La Vida Me Robo weekenights at 9pm on Univision. I recommend you check out the app or videos as well and download the app to get insider information on your favorite character too.

Can’t wait? You can find a  plethora of juicy clips to keep you busy on their dedicated novelas video page.

Lo Que La Vida Me Robo unfolds in Aguazul, a picturesque village where Montserrat Mendoza, a socialite lives.   The telenovela scenes are surrounded my breathtaking architecture, design and views.

My favorite character is Nadia Medina Arguelles, a smart and distinguished socialite.  Nadia starts her married life full of hopes and expectations, but soon realizes she is trapped in a cold marriage.   Nadia desires to find love and seeks refuge in the arms of Victor Hernandez. Her close friend, Montserrat is willing to make any sacrifice for her family and is eventually manipulated by her mother, Graciela Giacinti, to marry a rich man.

The characters are involved in a classic love triangle and experience love, friendship, passion, contempt and resentment between them, because of secrets, betrayal and hatred caused by the greed and avarice of those around them.    Make sure to watch “Lo Que La Vida Me Robo” telenovela to find out Montserrat’s and Nadia’s fate.  The telenovela will have you on the edge of your seat every evening!

To celebrate the Telenovela, Univision is offering one of my readers a $50 American Express Card!  You have the opportunity to win it by participating in the giveaway below:

Giving Guide For Giving Tuesday Ideas

After Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday.  Giving Tuesday is a great way to support local & national nonprofits during the Christmas Holidays by giving back to nonprofits that are making a difference to our local and global communities.  The  nationwide philanthropic event will be as huge  of a success for nonprofits as Cyber Monday and brings together families, communities and nonprofits.

My family celebrates giving everyday by giving back  to local charities and making contributions to multiple nonprofits. It has been a way of life for us since childhood.   Giving Tuesday is driven through social media and is a global effort to highlight the importance of giving.  Last year the initiative raised over 10 million dollars for charity.

If you are a parent, this is also a great way to share the gift of giving globally with your children.

Five Safe Teen Driving Tips

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post by Latina Bloggers Connect and AT&T.  However, all opinions are my own.

Did you know that 75% of teens say that texting and driving is common among other teens? I’ve never witnessed anyone I know texting and driving, but if I did, I would tell them it can wait.  Texting and driving can be fatal, but too many people ignore it.

20130823-231740.jpg

According to statistics over 100,000 accidents occur every year as a result of texting and driving. When most people hear about the statistics, many ignore the facts because it doesn’t affect them. However, as parents and teens who share the road it is an issue that does affect all of us.

AT&T has partnered with several champions to bring awareness to the dangers of texting and driving via the It Can Wait  website.  Since the It Can Wait movement was launch in 2009, more than 2 million pledges have been logged via the website, social sites, facebook and events.   The movement has made a difference in saving lives.  The website has a lot of resources to help teen drivers and adults understand the risks of texting and driving.

Here are 5 steps parents and teens can take to become safer drivers.

1. Read the stories of real people affected by texting and driving.

2. Watch the videos of people whose lives were changed in an instant.  The people in the videos are not actors.  The incidents described in the videos really happened.  The videos are available in english and spanish.

3. Take the Pledge.    Go to  www.itcanwait.com and take the no-texting-and-driving pledge and commit to refrain from texting and driving.

4. Get Involved.  You can also share your promise with others via Twitter (#itcanwait) and Facebook at www.facebook.com/ItCanWaitNoTextingWhileDriving.

5. Spread the word.  No text is worth the risk.  Take action to educate others about the risks of texting and driving.  If you are having a hard time sharing your concerns about texting and driving with friends and/or family, share these resources.   It can wait.

I decided to get involved with this campaign because I want to help educate others about the risks of texting and driving.   If these resources change one life it will make a difference in the safety of everyone around us. I’m looking forward to standing along side you to make a difference in our communities.

Question:  Did you visit the website and take the pledge? Will you share the resources with people you know?

Ford Trends – Go Further With Ford Conference 2013

I had the opportunity to attend the Further With Ford  ‪#‎FordTrends‬ 2013 Event & Conference in Detroit, Michigan.  Ford brought together 200 of the nations thought leaders, media and influencers to discuss 13 Trends of 2013, focusing on  five key trends: Disrupting the Drive, Greentopia, Returning to Your Senses, Sculpting the Future and Trust Is the New Black.

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to get an insiders look at the Ford culture and innovation.  Ford shared how they bring value and innovation to product design by focusing on the relationship with the consumer and the importance that trust has in the success of a company.  Ford  also gave us a sneak peek to test equipment, partnerships they are working on to improve sustainability and a first hand look at car prototypes of the future. I’m very excited about the way Ford is integrating technology into their product testing & development to make the vehicles of the future almost human-like.  Can you imagine a car of the future sensing your mood and modifying the climate in the car based on it’s interpretations? It’s going to happen!

One of the things I also liked about the Ford Trends conference is that I was able  to reconnect with fellow bloggers and influencers.  Ford Trends conferences provided the forum to learn, network and  partner with fellow bloggers on the test drives and sessions.

Top Five Highlights at Go Further With Ford — Ford Trends 2013 Conference

Visiting the Henry Ford Museum. I was able to learn about Henry Ford’s innovation and legacy.  There are many Ford vehicles, including the Model T and several Presidential cars.  I was also able to sit in the restored Rosa Park’s bus which inaugurated the civil rights movement.  The Ford museum acquired the bus in 2001 after outbidding the Smithsonian Institute with a winning bid of $427, 919.  After doing a little more research, I also learned I sat in Rosa Park’s historic seat.

Meeting Apple Computer CoFounder and Philantropist, Steve Wozniak,  was definitely a lifetime highlight for me.  As an Engineer, I have always admired his innovation.  Steve Wozniak is credited for being the main designer of the first Apple computers. Steve Wozniak also intrigued us with his input on how technology is being integrated into the cars of the future.

We also toured the city of Detroit and participated in various Ford car test driving expeditions and had the opportunity to preview the Ford concept Atlas truck.  The car is futuristic and perfect for a man that loves big trucks with a little edge.  I learned to drive the Fusion Energi efficiently and also tested tried to drive the Ford Fusion around the track in 40 seconds.  I definitely would recommend the Fusion Energi to drivers that are looking for an earth friendly economical vehicle.

We celebrated the 50th birthday of the Ford Mustang, my favorite Ford vehicle! Happy Birthday Mustang.  Wishing you another 50 years of success! Ford launched a cool Youtube channel to celebrate 50th anniversary of the Mustang. Watch the Ford Mustang countdown on Youtube by clicking the link.

The most memorable part of the conference were the speakers. One of my favorite presentations was the Returning to Your Senses session by Google’s Jenny Lyyken and her discussion on personal choices that attribute to our health, happiness and work balance.  It definitely left a big impression on me and was a great reminder to be a compassionate leader in the workplace.

The 13 Trends to follow in 2013 video presentations are also available on Youtube.  If you have the time, I would recommend you watch them or at  least one presentation.

Question:   What was your favorite session at the Ford Trends conference?  What was your biggest takeaway from your favorite session.

Californian Millennials Love The Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta 2014 is a cute little car packed with lots of fun for the young at heart.  Millennials are beginning to enter the market choosing the Fiesta 30% more over the competition.  California seems to love this line of vehicles as well, selecting it 22% more times among the Scion, Fit, Yaris, and Versa.  Available at 41mpg highway fuel efficiency, it makes sense why millennials in California are drawn to the Ford Fiesta.

Earlier in the week I met this colorful bunch at the Ford event in Santa Monica.  We drove up the scenic beachside Pacific Coast highway looping around the curvaceous Mulholland Drive.  The technology in the 2014 vehicle has been simplified from later versions making it friendlier to all users.  It wasn’t dark enough for me to enjoy the ambient lighting, but I heard it’s an attractive feature.  Music lovers would appreciate the 8 speakers that surround the interior of this small car.  Thank goodness for My Key technology — parents can cap the volume level!

If you are planning on purchasing a car for your millennial, I would encourage you to test drive the Ford Fiesta.  Its compact size makes it easier to get around town without “elbowing” through traffic and narrow parking lots, which is ideal for new drivers.  Plus, it has a friendly sticker price!  Now what’s not to love about that?
