Did you know the creator of Mother’s Day, Ann Jarvis originally celebrated Mother’s day in 1908, three years after her mother’s death as a tribute to her mom and motherhood everywhere. Although Ann never had any children of her own, her efforts led to recognition of Mother’s Day as a national holiday within six years! As the creator of Mother’s Day Ann tried to end the holiday when it started to be commercialized after she felt that the holiday was not being recognized as she envisioned. She never succeeded in her efforts to abolish the Holiday and Mother’s Day is now a 20 billion dollar holiday.

As you think about Mother’s day should we consider breaking the bank or just honoring mom? I think the answer is somewhere in between. It’s important to celebrate our mothers and honor them to show them we love them and appreciate them.

1. Create A Picture Album For Mom: Find your top 10 favorite photos with you and mom and create a picture book in a photo album.

2. Write Mom A Poem: In your own words write mom a sweet poem to show her how much you care about her and love her. Also check out write a poem in 50 seconds for some help with writing a poem. Sometimes the poems are kind of silly, but it’s a great resource for words that rhyme for your special poem. It will also make you smile. Everyone needs some more joy in their life.

3. Take Mom To The Park: Pack some lunch and take mom to the park. If you have children it is also a great place for bonding with family. Give mom your full attention and don’t let anything distract you from spending quality time with mom.

Wild Movie Womens Retreat | How To Rest, Rejuvenate & Restore Your Soul

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment invited me and a guest to a Wild Movie Women’s Wellness Retreat in Palm Springs, California. It was an event filled with rest, rejuvenation and a restoration of my soul.    We celebrated the release of the movie Wild on DVD with morning yoga, a hike through part of the Pacific Crest Trail similar to the movie Wild, Spa Treatments and campfire discussions.

I was so excited to invite my sister to a Wellness retreat in beautiful Palm Springs, CA.  It took us several hours of planning to get out of our homes.  There was the typical guilt that happens with us as wives, moms and women when were heading off somewhere without our families.  How will they survive with out us?  Let me buy groceries so my family  doesn’t starve.  Do I really deserve some “me” time?  Needless to say, we did!  We packed our bags, stopped listening to all the voices that tell us we don’t deserve some “me” time and headed off to a well deserved Women’s Wellness retreat.

On the afternoon of our arrival we were treated to an outdoor screening of the Wild DVD movie before its release on a giant screen.  We enjoyed lots of treats including salted pretzels, chocolate, popcorn, speciality drinks and received a gift REI backpack with lots of goodies including the Wild Movie DVD, Wild movie Soundtrack and Wild Book.  We also received a map and hiking guide from the Pacific Crest Trail Organization and Palm Springs Travel guide from the Visitors Bureau.

The DVD includes a lot of special features such The Real Cheryl Strayed, The real weight of MONSTER, A Pacific Crest Interactive map, Deleted scenes, several promotional featurettes, A Photo gallery and a special message from Cheryl Strayed,

We all bonded under the stars as we laughed and cried over the powerful message in Wild movie and prepared ourselves for an journey of self-discovery the next day.

 

Resting Your Soul With Yoga

Our day started with morning Yoga to encourage overall health and wellness.   We learned several movements to strengthen and stretch our bodies and breathing techniques to rest our bodies.  We were able to release the stress and pressures in our bodies and be present in a calm and peaceful space.  I walked away from the Yoga session with better posture and techniques to make my body more flexible and relaxed.   It was a calming experience.

We prepared ourselves for our trip with a healthy breakfast and an immersive virtual reality session, “Wild – The Experience”, with a scene on the Pacific Crest trail with Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern characters created by Fox Entertainment Home and Fox Searchlight under the newly created Fox Innovation labs.   Through the Oculus and Samsung VR equipment we were able to experience a never before seen segment and witness scenes on the PCT.  It was a surreal experience and it felt like we were actually there.  I really felt like I could just reach out into virtual reality and touch Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspooon).  It was a surreal experience.

 

Rejuvenating Our Souls with a Pacific Crest Trail Hike

We headed out to the Pacific Crest trail with our PCT association guides and wandered through the trails.  On the Pacific Crest trail we found several flowers in bloom, a great landscape and reminder of beauty in the desert.   We also stood in the middle of a PCT landmark with the Pacific Trail South towards our left and the Pacific Crest Trail North to our right.   The afternoon on the PCT is an experience I will never forget.  It was very healing.   It has inspired me to  return to the PCT with friends and family and continue my journey to explore the healing mysteries of the Pacific Crest trail.

Spa Treatments and Campfire To Restore Our Souls

After our hike we headed to the Spa for beauty treatments.   I got a pedicure and my sister got a fancy massage and body scrub.   Every room at the Spa is very peaceful and calming.   We spent a couple hours in complete silence just focusing on our selfs as we realized how important it is to focus and nurture our physical and emotional health and spa treatments, quiet time, healthy food and healthy hikes.

We wrapped up our Wild Women Retreat with a Happiness campfire and a night of reflection & smores with Tedx speaker and author Britt Reints.  Britt shared her personal story of healing from recklessness and  provided us with encouragement and tips to stay healthy and happy.  She encouraged us to remove distractions from our life, to be compassionate with ourselves and most importantly, that we are bigger than our fears.  She is an amazing lady!

I’m very thankful for the staff at Fox Home Entertainment for our trip  and the movie Wild  for the gentle reminder to stay physically and emotional healthy by prioritizing  “me time” and going on adventures of self-discovery to rest, restore and rejuvenate our souls.
